      James A. Forbes, Jr. said the following about appearances: “When people rely on surface appearances and false racial stereotypes, rather than in-depth knowledge of others at the level of the heart, mind and spirit, their ability to assess and understand people accurately is compromised.”

       We live in a society where appearances are everything. Looking good has become the mantra of this generation. I believe that personal and merchandising appearances are important; as my wife is fond of saying, “presentation is everything.” While the saying is good for merchandising, it should not be the only basis for making personal choices. Appearances can be deceiving. While the wrapping may be attractive, what’s inside the package may be rotten.

      How does the saying go? “Not everything that looks good is good for you.” When God makes his choice He does not look at appearances, He examines our motives. “We justify our actions by appearances; God examines our motives.” Proverbs 21:2 (MSG) Do you remember how God rejected Jesse’s sons who looked good? God selected David because he had an inner quality that his brothers lacked. Don’t be fooled by appearances!
