Solomon continues to instruct his son on how he should live his life. He tells him that wisdom and the Word of God should govern his life. He then makes him the promise that the Word of God will bring him health and life. He also instructs him to keep the word of God before his eyes and to store it in his heart. Now, he begins to give him moral instructions. Moral instructions are teaching, advice and instruction given about moral behavior.

The first instruction is to guard your heart, to keep your heart from the corruption of the world. “Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it is the wellspring of life.” Proverbs 4:23 (WEB)

When the Bible speaks of the heart, it talks about the inner man, not the physical organ in your body. The inner man is your soul and spirit, the real you; it’s the part of you that’s eternal. So when Solomon says that you must guard your heart, he is talking about you, your personality, because what you allow to enter your inner man will manifest who you are. If you allow bitterness, you will be a bitter person; if you allow corruption, your will become corrupted; if you allow perversion, you become perverted. On the flip side, if you allow joy, you will be a joyful person; if you allow love, you become a lovable person.
