An Encouragement for Prayer

An Encouragement for Prayer

September 27, 2015

J.R.R. Tolkien writes the following in his book The Fellowship of the Ring: “Gandalf the wizard said, ‘All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.’”

What a powerful statement! We are all given time in this life and what we do with it is up to us. Time is the one thing we can never get back, once that day, hour, minute or second is gone we can never get it back. So it behooves us to make the most of the time allotted to us.

I once heard someone say that the cemetery is full of unfulfilled potential. Now that I am in what I like to call the back nine of my life, I am very much aware of the things I need to accomplish before my time expires. One of those priorities is to spend more time in the presence of the Lord in prayer. My goal is to spend more time with God, which means less TV, social media and just doing nothing.

The Bible instructs us to be devoted to prayer. “Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart.” Colossians 4:2 (NASB) The word devote is from the Greek word “proskartereo” meaning to attend constantly; to continually devote oneself. Therefore, as believers, we should talk to the Father all the time. I intend to make prayer a priority in my life.

Is prayer a priority in your life?

Be Blessed,

Bishop Jemmott
