Hating What is Wrong

Hating What is Wrong

September 21, 2015

We live in a very different society from the one I grew up in; when I was a child we celebrated those who did what was right. Today, doing the right thing is not encouraged. There is also the belief that doing what is necessary, even if it is wrong or illegal, in the end will justify the means. But the biblical perspective is different. Paul said the following: “Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good.” Romans 12:9b (NLT)

The Bible teaches that we must hate what is wrong and hold on to what is good. To fully understand what Paul is saying we need to look closely at the words “hate” and “hold”. The Greek word for “hate” comes from the word meaning abhor, which means to regard with extreme repugnance or aversion, to utterly detest. So, Paul is saying that we must consider doing wrong a detestable thing.

The next word “hold” comes from the Greek word meaning glue. Therefore, you need to hold on or glue yourself to anything that is good. To summarize, the believer should consider wrong things as detestable and should glue or bind themselves to things that are good.

“Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good.”

Be Blessed,

Bishop Jemmott
