John Loren Sandford wrote the following in his book, God’s Power To Change:
“Many Christians tend to “press on” in terms of managing their behavior (desire) rather than renewing their minds (Rom. 12:2) and receiving a new heart and spirit within (Ps. 51, Ezek. 36:26), which would naturally result in changed behavior. They have not, in reality, done away with childish things (1 Cor. 13:11), but they have controlled them while allowing them to remain as a part of the treasure in the storehouse of the heart (Luke 6:43-45).”
I like what Pastor Sandford says; allow me to paraphrase: “Most believers do not put away their human desires, but they control them by storing them up in the storehouse of their hearts and minds.” This is the reason some of us become vulnerable to our human desires.
Solomon who was an expert on human desire wrote the following in Proverbs 27:20:
“Just as Death and Destruction are never satisfied,
so human desire is never satisfied.” (NLT)
Because human desire is never satisfied it is crucial that you deal with it and the only way to deal with it is to daily present your body on the altar and renew your mind every day (Romans 12:1-2). You must also believe that your old nature has been dealt with on the cross and you have a new heart and new spirit in you (Galatians 2:20; 2 Corinthians 5:17).
My dear children, do not allow your human desires to control and rule your life, because once you allow it to rule your life, it will destroy your life and testimony. If you have succumbed to your human desires, repent, turn away and start fresh. Do not worry about the damage your human desire caused, because you cannot undo it, it is already done. You just have to learn to live with the consequences and pray that our merciful God will heal and restore those who were damaged.
Once you have turned, continue to present your body and renew your mind daily on the altar. Then turn around and help a brother or a sister who is struggling with their human desires. A note of caution: brothers, you cannot help sisters with their human desires, and sisters, you cannot help brothers with their human desires.
