When believers don’t make the Word of God a priority in their lives, there is the danger of slipping back into the lifestyle they were delivered from. The Apostle Peter talks about the dangers of slipping back in his Epistle. “So you must live as God’s obedient children. Don’t slip back into your old ways of living to satisfy your own desires. You didn’t know any better then. But now you must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy.” 1 Peter 1:14-15 (NLT)
Notice he said that we “must live as God’s obedient children.” But what should we obey? The commandments and standards of living are outlined in the Word of God. It’s the Word of God, the Bible, that will keep you from slipping back into your old way of living. Prior to receiving Christ as your Lord and Savior, you did whatever satisfied your desires. Your life was ruled by the desire of your flesh; you had no limits or boundaries.
But now that you are born again you must live a holy life in everything you do. But how can I live holy when I am still living in my flesh? If you feed the spirit, the flesh dies. By making the Word of God a priority in your life, you feed the spirit. The Word of God will keep you from slipping back to the place where your flesh dominated your life. It’s not easy, but it’s possible. Try it!
