From Bishop Jemmott’s book, Words of Encouragement: Book One
I have often heard people who don’t honor or serve God say that God hears and answers their prayers. While I don’t want you to be discouraged or to stop praying, I need to enlighten you as to what the Word of God teaches on prayer. “The Lord is far from the wicked, but he hears the prayers of the righteous.” Proverbs 15:29 (NLT) The scripture tells us about two types of people, the wicked and the righteous. God hears the prayers of the righteous and He is far from the wicked.
Proverbs 28:9 says, “God has no use for the prayers of the people who won’t listen to him.” (MSG) Let me paraphrase this verse. If you are not obedient to God, He will not hear your prayers.
Many of you are saying, “I prayed and God answered my prayer.” He answered your prayer because someone who is connected to Him was praying for you. Perhaps it was your wife, husband, mother, or as Helen Baylor sings, “I had a praying grandmother.” But there comes a time when you will need to pray for yourself, and only knowing and obeying God will get that prayer through.
