The ancient Chinese philosopher, teacher, editor, and politician Confucius said the following, “Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.” Legendary rock star Jon Bon Jovi was quoted for the following, “Success is falling nine times and getting up ten.” These are excellent statements and advice from two people who lived in different eras and are distinct from each other. The fundamental idea they are stressing is – when you fall, you must get up!
King Solomon, who was considered one of the wisest men of his time, wrote the following:
“No matter how many times you trip them up,
God-loyal people don’t stay down long;
Soon they’re up on their feet,
while the wicked end up flat on their faces.”
Proverbs 24:16 (MSG)
The difference between what King Solomon said and the other two writers is that someone else is the cause of your fall. It could be some enemy, or maybe someone who does not have your best interest at heart and tries to put you down. It is one thing to fall by your own doing from a decision you made. However, there is a difference when someone is deliberately attempting to make you fall.
Solomon also informs us that there is a difference between when godly and wicked people fall. Godly people never stay down, but the wicked end up flat on their faces. Why do godly or as the Message Bible puts it – “God-loyal people” fall, but never stay down? The godly fall because others want them to fall, but when they fall they do not stay down because God is on their side.
Listen carefully to the text: “No matter how many times you trip them up.” Some people will try and some will succeed in tripping us up just because we are loyal to God. Have you noticed that no one bothers you until you declare that you are a God-loyal person? The minute you make that declaration, attacks begin.
But here is the good news, godly people fall but they don’t stay down! We can’t stay down because there is resurrection power flowing in us! “But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.” Romans 8:11 (NASB) Because the Holy Spirit lives in you, you cannot stay down. Just like it was impossible for Jesus to stay in the grave, it’s impossible for you to stay down.
If you are a God-loyal, godly person, or if you are a born again believer and you have fallen, it’s time to get up. It is impossible for you to stay down because you have resurrection power flowing in your life. So come on – get up!
One last thing, sometimes God will allow the enemy to cause us to fall so that we can gain new perspective while we are down. Once we gain that perspective, it’s time to get up!
