From Bishop Jemmott’s book Words of Encouragement: Book One
People often come to me and ask this question: How can I forgive after what was done to me? Let me answer your question by giving you the definition of real forgiveness, and then let me tell you what Jesus said about forgiveness and finally the result of forgiveness.
“Forgiveness is the intentional and voluntary process by which a victim undergoes a change in feelings and attitude regarding an offense, lets go of negative emotions such as vengefulness, with an increased ability to wish the offender well.”
The Bible teaches that we must forgive. “If you forgive anyone’s sins, they are forgiven. If you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.” John 20:23 (NLT)
Notice you have to forgive the person who sinned against you. Let me anticipate your question. How do I forgive someone who has taken advantage of my kindness or a family member who has sexually and mentally abused me or someone who has betrayed me?
Well, forgiveness will not be easy, but it’s possible and necessary! If you ask the Holy Spirit to help you, He will help you forgive and release the person. As you forgive, you open the door that leads to your complete healing and restoration. Forgiveness also releases you from the power the offender has over you.
One final word, if you don’t forgive, there is a possibility that the person (offender) may not receive forgiveness from God.
Be Blessed,
Bishop Jemmott
