A proverb is derived from astute observations about how life usually works. The creator of a proverb shows himself very knowledgeable and perceptive, able to see what is generally true and to draw conclusions from it. The book of Proverbs is divinely inspired by God and is an excellent source of divine knowledge and wisdom. This knowledge and wisdom is only effective when it leaves the pages of the book, and comes alive in our hearts and mind.
Listen to the instructions in Proverbs 4:20-21: “My son, attend to my words. Turn your ear to my sayings. Let them not depart from your eyes. Keep them in the midst of your heart.” (WEB)
Solomon lists four things we need to do to have the wisdom of the book come alive in us. First, you need to pay attention to the Words of the Proverbs. To pay attention is to heed or be attentive to what someone is saying. I could give you the greatest advice in the world, but if you fail to heed or be attentive to the advice, it means nothing. You cannot neglect the Word of God the Bible and expect the Bible to affect your life.
Be Blessed,
Bishop Jemmott
