The second Epistle to Timothy was written during the Apostle Paul’s second arrest and imprisonment. This was Paul’s second incarceration, which eventually resulted in his execution. Therefore, this Epistle is Paul’s final message to his spiritual son Timothy. He writes the following in 2 Timothy 4:7a (NLT), “I have fought the good fight…”

      The Greek word for “fought” in this text means to contend or struggle for a prize; it also means to compete in the games. So Paul is telling Timothy, “I have contended and struggled for the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and I have completed my assignment, the race that was given to me. Timothy, you are at the start of your race. Now it’s your turn to fight the good fight, and complete your assignment.”

      Now that I am on what I like to call the back nine of my life, I hope I am becoming wiser. As I journey to the last half of my life, I am expecting it to be greater than the front nine. This is what I have learned on this journey, I no longer fight battles I cannot win, and I don’t fight battles that have no reward. At the end of the day, the only battles that matter are the battles we fight for the Lord.

      So chose your battles and “Fight the Good Fight.”
