Solomon writes the following about humility in Proverbs 22:4: “The result of humility is fear of the Lord, along with wealth, honor, and life.” (HCSB) The text promises us that humility has rewards, and a reward is what we receive in return or recompense for service, merit, hardship. So being humble has its own reward!
The first reward of humility was the reverential fear of the Lord, which is to have deep respect and honor for the Lord. Having this kind of fear is the foundation for wisdom. “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” Proverbs 9:10 (NASB)
The second reward of humility is wealth. To have wealth is to have a great quantity or store of money, valuable possessions, property, or other riches. The prevalent philosophy is that if you want wealth you cannot be humble, but you must be arrogant and self-assured. However, the Word of God teaches that the humble increase in wealth. As hall of fame coach Rick Pitino said, “Humility is the true key to success. Successful people lose their way at times. They often embrace and overindulge from the fruits of success. Humility halts this arrogance and self-indulging trap. Humble people share the credit and wealth, remaining focused and hungry to continue the journey of success.”
Choose humility and continue to succeed!
